What do you do for students who want to enter the medical field and need an SSN for things besides work? For example, they need an SSN to do a background check to either apply for or start certain nursing programs. I also have students who want to volunteer in areas such as pharmacies or hospitals, and are asked for SSN's (also for background checks). Does anyone have a solution for this?
The second question involves the Temporary Visitor's Driver's license. I have a student who received a COS, and somewhere down the line, did not receive the COS approved I-20 with the red stamp. If you've helped students through this, then you know that the DMV's are very focused on that stamped I-20. I contacted the Service Center for a new stamped I-20. They said they could only send a copy of it, which the DMV won't accept. Got any ideas? Or does anyone have a contact at the Secretary of State's Office that I could talk to?
Thank you!

PREVIOUS POSTINGS:
Dear Roundtable participants:
Amy Sturdy, International Student Advisor at IIT would like to pose a question to the Roundtable group:
We have an undergraduate student currently registered and enrolled for 12 credits who wants to withdraw from a 3 credit course. If the student withdraws from the course and receives a "W" for it, would you consider them out of status for unauthorized early withdrawal (if they did not have approval)? The student would be considered full time for the University and according to the financial aid rule (if applicable). The course appears on the transcript with a "W" grade. Also, when looking on our database, the student would be registered for 12 hours, but the enrolled hours would be 9 credits.
Please respond directly to Amy on sturdy@iit.edu with any feedback or suggestions. Thank you!

I HEARD....J-VISA QUESTION
We’ve heard that J-visa students do not need to show proof of employment to obtain a SSN, in contrast to F-1 visa students who are required to show proof of current employment in order to apply for a SSN. Can anyone verify this information? Thanks! Please respond to Karlene Henninger at Roosevelt University khenninger@roosevelt.edu.
